More Mockups

These are some of the forms I came up with in response to my concept. They are all based on the keyboard, and either 52 white notes or 88 black and white notes. I will show in another post how I applied the different muscial eras to these designs.

This image fans out really nicely when it is on the wrist – but as I am working with polypropylene sheet it doesn’t translate well into the thicker material.

This image above is an experiment with iron on interfacing and acetate.

I thought about doing a stack lot of bangles – either 52 or 88.

This idea of holding the translated sheet music pattern with a bangle is something I am currently working on.

This was an experiment with resin and cross stitch sheet, or something of the type from spotlight. The resin fills in the holes – It can create this really interesting positive negative image if there is a sheet underneath. If I work more on this I will get some images up.

Mock Ups

I haven’t posted much on my workshop assignment. I took some photos today of the mock ups I have been making in relation to the piano and pieces from the 5 different composers I have chosen.

As a refresher, I am doing a piece from 5 composers from the

Baroque – Bach

Classical -  Beethoven

Romantic – Chopin

Impressionist – Debussy

20th Century – Gershwin

What I am trying to visually explore with these mock ups is the keyboard/piano instrument and ways that I can show the piece of music and it’s relation to the piano/keyboard.

IMG_2302

This was the first mock up. Simply a piece of music wrapped around to create a bangle. I am looking at printing the music onto acetate and then winding it up, so you get that layered effect.

These are two types of bangle mock ups. The first has 52 parts, and the second has 88 parts.

IMG_2304

This image is just making marks on the keys. I read a piece of music and mark which key is played. When finished it would show how many times a key was touched.

IMG_2307

This design is based more on beats and bars. It is more complex and when translated into a full piece of music it will be very long. I think it looks really nice on.

These are four other mock ups that I am working on.

Music & keyboard.

I have been home and picked up my keyboard and all the sheet music I am using for my Major 6 project.

So, if time permits, I want to learn the pieces that are the basis for each set of pieces for this semester.

After discussing my ideas with my music teaching mother, I now think I have a better grasp on my own ideas and where they are headed and why. The all important WHY?

I think, but I am not sure – What I am attempting to do is turn sound into a solid. Why? Because I can.

Concert goer

I have just been to a David Helfgott concert here in Canberra.  Most people would know of him through the movie Shine – which is about his life.

He was wearing this shirt tonight actually. He is a very talented pianist. His concert tonight has been a real inspiration for my workshop assignment. He played a bit of this and that, some Chopin we think, maybe some Liszt and his well loved Rachmaninov. We were not sure exactly what he was playing when, apparently he likes to mix things up a bit. He made us work to figure out what he was playing.

I just googled him and found this image -

This is an image of a 3 metre sculpture which was commissioned to honour Helfgotts’ life. It is by a Coffs Harbour artist named John Van Der Kolk. It is good reference material which relates to my own work.

I get my keyboard and all the sheet music a metalsmith could wish for this weekend. Then the work will begin ..

What am I thinking?

The pieces that I am wishing to create are arm pieces. Bangles you may say.

But the idea behind them, again of course relates to the keyboard and piano playing.

There will be a set for each composer mentioned in a previous post. So 2 pieces for each era – one for left and one for right. Can you see the connection?

I’ve been looking at ways that I can visually interpret sheet music from my listed posse. This is one I am quite happy with but.. to represent a whole piece of music this way is going to be huge. I’ll work it out though.

IMG_2176

I will try and explain this design. What I am hoping to work on is the keyboard. 88 keys need to be fit into each little panel.

In this picture I have looked at a few bars from George Gershwin’s Prelude II. I have the keyboard face with all the keys on it and I have seperated it into how many beats are in each bar in this particular piece of music. Then from the piece of music I place the notes written on the keys that are actually played and the timing in which they are in each bar. I hope that makes sense.

IMG_2177

I traced the initially drawing and got this interesting line and point type design. Which again can be related back to a piece of music. What do you think?

IMG_2178

This is just an image of the keyboard with the line and point design. Let me know what you think! K.

Music of the ages

I will be exploring music from each era  starting with -

  • Baroque
  • Classical
  • Romantic
  • Impressionist
  • 20th Century
  • and maybe contemporary

So I would like you to meet my posse for the next few months..

bach_shades

J.S Bach – Mr Baroque (yes he does wear Ray Bans)

VS

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

I still have not decided between the two, who will represent the Classical era? Vote now.

It has  taken sometime, but finally I have a concept for my semesters work.

I would like to introduce music as my theme, in particular music written especially for my favourite instrument - The Piano.

I am going to be focusing on this instrument and the music for it as my mother is a Piano, and now also an organ teacher. It is an artform that has surrounded me for as long as I can remember. Before I knew art and drawing, I knew Piano and it’s music.

It has been a major influence on my life – I have learnt off and on. I am not the best student, as some may know.

It just seemed natural to combine music as an artform and inspiration into my practice as a metalsmith. So from now on, I am going to dream, eat, live music! Join me.. if you dare.  Thanks Andre, K.
